I wouldn't buy a lot of parts just to keep them...

I wouldn't buy a lot of parts just to keep them on hand, other than an impeller & gasket, spare lanyard and some tools. The chance of a thermostat going bad out of the box is too slim to worry about....

Where did it break? If it broke at the strut, I would bet that it was never aligned, or if it was, it wasn't tightened in place.

Show photos, if possible- can't even guess why without knowing more.
