did it work properly after you replaced the battery? If you let it sit and it works that might indicate that the battery has time to cool off and ready for another go....

My guess is it wasn't the spark plugs but a flat battery... great news and fix.. make sure that you are getting 14 or so volts out of that alternator or you will have the same issue sooner rather...
