If you have a rebuilder in your area, they can knock it out with no problem. Sometimes it isn't much cheaper, but I like to keep the rebuilder in business just in case I really need him someday.

Take it out and remove the lower part of the housing where you can get to the impeller. They can get covered up with carpet fibers, etc. and lose their ability to pump.

I don't know what size tap you need for your boat, but my boat's plugs are 3/4" NPT. The hole is about an inch, but pipe sizes are the inside diameter of the pipe that would thread in that hole.
