All fixed now, an hour or so with a stainless scouring pad got the oil off. The platform will never look that good, previous owner varnished it and I really can't be bothered taking the whole thing...

I'm pretty confident this is not anything to do with prior polishing bringing the gel down. It would take a LOT of compounding to do that and being that aggressive would have damaged the vinyl...
