oil is oil and protects metal the same at any given temp. colder oil = more friction. More friction = more metal being removed. It's probably why marine engines get yanked at a few thousand hours...

Actually, it's hotter than that as the temp in your engine bay is not 180 degrees. And the heat in your engine is hotter than your water temp. Water is trying to cool down the inside of your motor....
