Everything is fine when rolling forward and when the power is disconnected for a while. I can then push it backwards.

That's odd. My Maristar 230 is a 99 and has a paddle wheel and all the stuff in the manual talks about recalculating the speedo; yet there's nothing in the manual about the recalculation process...
