Do you mean an outboard regulator? Sure, the new one may not have that but it still has one- included in a regulator is a rectifier, which changes the AC voltage to DC.

I don't know why the choke wasn't set up better- that should have cured the problem. My friend has a Harris FloteDek with the Yamaha sterndrive- looked like it never had any kind of choke thermostat...

I went back and read more of the pages- he wasn't very consistent in his thinking WRT aspiration- he seemed to thing it was the fuel delivery, not how it breathes, which is the reason it's called...
