I "think" I was getting code 42 last year. Over winter decided to replace plugs, wires, cap, rotor, IC module due to corrosion, and check timing is set to 10° BTDC.

Runs and starts better for sure.

Almost every engine will have a tstat bypass so the water runs through the exhaust and back into the lake. The tstat simply regulates more/less water to run at a constant temp.
