I've never removed mine, but I've read on here that it can be a real pain to get the 12 holes to line up. You may want to mark it to ensure you put it back exactly the way it is now.

Can you fill it with the switch in the closed position? Maybe your check valve is not completely closed and will require some adjustment. I would assume you'd notice (and the bilge pump would run)...
