If the engine seems to be outputting the correct power then it's got to be either the transmission or prop. Have you checked the transmission oil? it may be time for an oil and filter change?

I always use a pump through the drain hose then once 99% is out put the end in an oil tray in the bilge with sh*t loads of towels etc to catch anything that spills out, normally only get a few drips...
