Problem solved! Test drove boat after new cable...

Problem solved!

Test drove boat after new cable install and the steering is awesome!

To summarize: make sure rudder is full of grease and cable is in good condition.

To answer some of my own questions and help others, I followed the middle diagram for cable insertion and it came out perfect.

Also, the threaded tube needs to be adjusted so that you get 1.5 turns...

I agree. Also, the soft & slow start of the makita prevents slinging polish all over the place. The money you save with the HF unit will be time spent cleaning splatter. Not fun IMHO.

Are you using a rotary or DA? I used a rotary with 8" pad and was able to tip it and get right up to most spots. Otherwise cut up a pad and do it by hand.
