New strut arrived while I was out of town. Placing them side by side and measuring the gap between them, and then switching sides and measuring again I could really tell the old one is bent.

Got the strut off!
Hooked the open ends of the strut with a ratchet strap routed around the trailer frame (not my idea, jaw above), put some tension on it and hit it with a heat gun ~1000 F for about 15 - 20 minutes. ...
