I think the hoses in that system are usually reinforced with wire to prevent collapsing. This might be an issue depending on the hose you used.

Here is my setup. It has a garden hose fitting but I submerge a short section of hose into a full 5 gal. pail and let the pump draw the water into the engine.

Bucket method

You can set it up to draw the water from a 5 gal bucket. if you are worried about that. This method also helps determine if the raw water pump is working well.
