Replacing speakers on 2004 XStar tower cans

How hard is it to replace the speakers in the tower cans on a 2004 XStar? I believe it has the factory sound system and the speakers are Clarion. Can I just buy new 6.5" marine speakers and drop them in or is it more complicated? What type of speakers do you recommend and also pointers to where to buy would be appreciated.

First thing would be to pull one of the old speakers and measure opening of the pod. Those just might be a 6" with a 5.25" opening. Next would be to make sure the speaker is not recessed into the pod in any way. If there is a lip around the outside DIA of the pod, you will have to find a speaker that fits within that. If the pod is metal, be prepared to drill and tap new mounting holes. Odds are slim that the new speaker would line up.

Speaker technology has come a long way since back then. Why throw good money at a bad solution. Are you looking at getting tunes back to your rider or getting some quality sound around around the boat for partying. If the answer is rider I would consider going HLCD. You now have a reason to upgrade so why not do it right the first time.

Wet Sounds XS-65's fit perfectly. Look and sound great. I installed them in my factory cans before removing them for REV 10's.

Did you have to drill new mounting holes?

No, they lined up with existing holes.

What about the spot for the 1- tweeter? All I am able to find from WetSounds or JL Audio are component systems that do not have the extra tweeter. Any recommendations?

Leaving it as a dummy is an option, an LED courtesy puck or fab a blank cover.
