prop shootout Xstar style

so dropped the boat in a couple days ago and said something that got me thinking,

dunk and fill...

that's about all we ever do, we have to idle by a 1/4 mile long no wake zone but after that its all riding all the time. Its an 07 MCXer.

I currently have a 14.25x14.5 OJ on the boat, and I'm thinking about comparing a 14.75x13 OJ and 15x12 acme for my next prop. Fuel burn and plane time will be the two most important factors.

anyone tried this before?

Not exact comparison, but I replaced my Acme 537 (13.5x16) with the Acme 2079 (14.5x12) on my 2001 X30. I love it. Would even say that it completely transformed my boat's performance and enjoyment, but don't want to be overly dramatic. Considered the 15x12 but was going to be a bit tight, and figured 14.5x12 was already a huge change for me.

Your two questions: Fuel burn- i burn less gas now (my 537 cavitated slightly when surfing, increasing fuel burn), Plane time- not even a fair fight in my case, 12er hole shot is ridiculous and planes very, very quickly.

We surf most of the time so fully loaded with 3000# plus crew. The 537 would cavitate badly with that much load, so I could only run about 2000#. The 2079 pushes 3000# effortlessly. In addition, oddly, my RPMs at 11 mph went DOWN compared to the 537. That tells me the 537 was cavitating some even with the 2000#, just not bad enough to notice (yikes !).

Wakeboard with way less load, so 537 was fine, but 2079 hole shot and plane time is way better. Certainly no downsides using 2079 for boarding.

WOT went from roughly 38mph/4800 rpm to 35mph/5000 rpm, but we never run it like that. Even when cruising we stick around 25-30 mph.

For me, it was "finesse" versus "raw power". Used to be "hit it" to yank the boat out of the water and wait (hope) for it to plan, now we just ease into it even with full load. World's Strongest Man, when the huge guys pull a tractor trailer: that is how I feel about my X30 now with the 2079.

On My X-30 I went form the 14.25x14.5 to the 15x12. We mostly wakeboarding with 3k. Time to plane was almost cut in half, RPM's went down by 200 and so did the fuel useage. Win win to me. I felt the prop made a bigger difference than going from the 5.7 to the 6.0.

Top speed is around 36 now. But that's not at all important to us either.

I'm considering a Acme prop but I don't want to loose my top end speed I need 40mph to barefoot but I wakeboard with an additional #2500lbs and probably increase to #3000lbs sometime in the future

I wrote down what rpm the boat was at for each mph on a few props. I will try and find it and post it up to give you some reference. Let me know if you want to borrow my new prop to see how you like it.

Easiest answer, just get a new star! You still riding? Mine is at BHM so if you need a 3rd let me know, I have the dry suit out.

forecast isnt looking promising for riding the rest of the year, after monday's 67 there will be 3 nights in a row its forecasted to get below freezing. think i might have to hang it up this sunday

I put an ACME 14,5 x 14.25 on my 2005 MCX xStar and that prop was fabulous!!! Definately can recommend it...

For more top end speed without losing much holeshot try an OJ 14.75 X 15.5. Top speed for me with that prop was 41-42.
If you run 1400# rear ballast and 1250# front (total) the wake is sweet.
No need to use the rear hard tanks at all......I don't. They're too far forward anyway.
