Grease Zerc Fitting on Steering Cable

2 Attachment(s)
Folks:
I have an 89 MasterCraft and need to grease the steering cable. The issue is there is no grease zerc fitting in the aluminum housing. There is a whole where it appears there should be a fitting.

I have tried every possible size of zerc fittings but nothing fits into the threads.

Should there be a zerc fitting there?
If so what size?
If no zerc fitting how does one go about greasing the cable?

thanks

I drilled mine out, vacuuming as I went, and and screwed in a larger size zerk. 5 years no issues. Origional fitting cannot be found.

mine busted out this spring when I went to grease it up. it stuck in the grease gun. Drill it out and put in the next size bigger.

Thanks for the responses. Do you take the cable out before drilling or am I over thinking? Also I have read that there should not be a ball\stopper in the zerc fitting so there is a way to release any pressure, does that still hold true?

thanks..........

How about using a needle on your grease gun.

Here is the fitting on my '87.

Just cover your drill bit in grease, it'll catch the shavings. Then cover the tap in grease as well, to catch the shavings. Also remove the check valve from the new zerk and you're done!
