2006 X1 Engine Cover - Walk-through

Well after ripping the rear engine cover vinly for the 2nd time. I decided a different route was needed.

I stripped off the foam and vinly and was left with a 5/8" aluminum and honeycomb deck. Took it over to a aluminum fabrication shop and we came up with a design that should be pretty cool.

Hes going to cut out the same size plate (basically a rectangle with 2 little cut outs to reach the handles better) out of 1/4" aluminum plate. We are then going to attach (2) 2" blocks where the hinges screw into, and 2" square pipe will reinforce the edges and sit on the brackets of the boat. Im going to have seadeck.com send me a template kit and make a template for the top part and have it match the colors of the boat and have the mastercraft logo placed in it.

This should
1) clear the airfilter / valve covers which currently where being squished by the oem sundeck as the plastic bin is cracked etc...
2) Allow a nice walk way to get to the back of the boat instead of stepping on the vinyl

I will post pictures are we progress. Hes doing everything in autocad and a cnc machine, so once we have a good prototype it should be hard to duplicate if anyone is interested

OEM piece ripped apart for now.

Post up some pics when you get it done. I have been thinking about adding a walkway to mine over the winter.

GREAT idea-been thinking about that for mine, engine cover needs a re-do.

Will do!

Pretty excited been wanting to do this a long time!

Some ideas I could use some help with. Aluminum on aluminim is going to rattle (engine cover sitting on those rails... Will need some kind of rubber strip to put under it. Also im wondering how much louder the engine is going to sound resonating off the alum. I was wondering if some kind of sound deadening material could be used. The type used in car ( dynamta etc..) but not sure how it will work with heat...

Wrap the rails in black carpet. PO did that on mine and thought it was factory. Makes stepping on rail easy and no corrosion or scratches to the metal to show (or rattles as you mentioned). Surprised M/C didn't do this from the beginning

good call!

I can take the rails out while this is being fabricated and get that done. You think they just glued the carpet?

Rossterman 10-03-2013 02:29 PM

Yup just glued on. Looks great and really finishes off the engine bay. Used a simple black carpet- not too thick or very expensive. Looks like cut it out, turned over and sprayed carpet contact glue on the back and rail, and wrapped it up. I'll post a few pics when i get back from Nigeria.

Nice. I think im going to cover the bottom of the plate with this:

Dynamat HoodLiner - suppose to reduce heat and noise
SeaDeck the top
Carpet the rails...

How is this project coming along?
Any new pictures.....

Hey, I got the template made a while ago... and finally got the walk through made...

I guess the shop forgot our discussion about the valve covers and put a cross beam right in the middle, but its not welded to anythign where i need to cut it. Gonna have them chop it off and then tack weld the ends to the plate.

Contacted SeaDek and sent them the .dxf file...
