Ballast gauge acting weird

So last week my starboard ballast gauge started behaving erratically. 2006 X30. The gauge cycles at key on but then only sporadically registers a reading for brief moments. No matter what the actual level in the ballast tank is, when it does momentarily give a reading it is accurate (of course accurate is a relative term when dealing with these gauges). I've searched the forum but can't seem to find this same behavior. Where do I start to diagnose? I have double checked the connector at the sending unit and all the connections behind the gauge appear to be tight. Has the sender gone bad? I there a way to test whether it is the sender or the gauge? The fact that it cycles at key on would tend to make me lean towards to sender.
Thanks in advance.

I wish I was posting a solution, but unfortunately I am on writing to say I am experiencing the exact same problem on my 07 X2. It doesn't seem to be effecting anything...it just bugs me a bit.

Lol. I would personally start with the connector. Hard wire it real quick, if it works, new connector. Start easy and most simple problem first and always.

I have an 07 X2. Ballast gauges are very fickle. Calibrated the floats and they work a few times then don't work after a few times out. I've just quit trying to keep them accurate. this wintr I am replacing the top gauge with a Faria Depth and multi temp gauge.

i have an 07 x2 and same issues, feel this is all to common and gauges really just don't work, is this why people are removing the hard tanks and putting only bags in? then you can just visually see if the bags are empty or not?

For anyone who cares: the sending unit was bad. I picked one up from Deb as AZ MasterCraft was unloading their inventory and that did the trick!
Problem solved.

The senders are very fragile - that's why they stopped installing them and went with timers instead. On the newer boats, the electronic gauge just reflects how long the pump has been on for rather than a physical measurement.

I never partially filled a tank anyway - and have overflow bags, so I removed my gauges a while ago
