New Slalom Skier

Well...for my 50th birthday last week I got my 1st Slalom Ski. I started wakeboarding last year and I absolutely love it. The problem is I try to do too much for my age and have ended up with some nasty falls jumping the wake. So, we thought I'd be safer on a ski instead.

I usually wakeboard real early in the mornings...when I jumped in the water to put my board on...my family opened up a seat and tossed the beautiful HO Ski into the water. I was SO reluctant to give it a try...scared I couldn't pull up with both feet in the bindings...but guess what....our Mastercraft pulled me out so smooth...I LOVED IT as well. Now I'm chomping at the bit to get onto the slalom course. But first....I guess I better learn the basics. I felt real comfortable by the 3rd day and working both sides of the boat. Just wondering if anybody has any good links for me to view about the basics of body position and learning to make turns correctly.

The clock is ticking and I don't waste valuable time....LOL ;)

Welcome. Hopefully you get hooked. Skiing seems easier on the body than Wakeboarding. Different kind of fun.

Another option, given your location, would be to swing by Coble ski school for a few tips / lessons. If you can get right up, this would be a great way to get form tips from the get-go.
Looks like you are very close, very jealous.

If you can get some quality instruction from the beginning, that would be the best thing you could ever possibly do. Learn proper technique before bad habits become muscle memory. Not from a video, but feedback from a coach, school or very experienced skier, especially if you are seriously considering course skiing or competition slalom.

I don't know if it's any easier on the body.....but sure is fun!

Yes +1 - get a few lessons and grab as much water time as you can... :) --- on my 3rd full season slaloming... welcome and congrats... which ho ski did you get?

Drills!

Slalom is a fluid set of linked actions - learning the drills and how/what they are intended to teach and where they link together will make the course work for you instead of beat you up.

Hey 88 when is drill time.... ;)

You are super close to Coble Ski School, which is one of the most respected schools in the industry. They may have some limited availability later in the season as they stay super busy. I am going to a one-day lesson on September 7th.

Next weekend is the NC State Championships at Coble, I would go check it out! http://ncwaters.ipower.com/StateEventorder.pdf

Also, there is a group of us who ski on Harris Lake near Holly Springs/Sanford at least once a week, send me a PM if you're interested in joining us sometime.

Dunno - we gotta ski together sometime - for you being all of 20 minutes south on I-55 we'll have to make it happen.

Where's this SW Chicago waterski group and why cannot any of us meet up ever?

WOW--didn't know about this Coble Ski School. And I only live 20 minutes from it. I've got to sign up for some lessons. I loved reading all the feedback from yesterday. It's nice to hear some positive feedback instead of my family/friends saying....."you're 50 years old...who starts doing slalom courses at 50????"

I can already tell that I will find slalom to be both challenging and rewarding!

Can't wait for more water time this weekend!

The ski group hasn't happened yet... the weather was so lame this year so far.

both my kids are going away this august to college and we have a vacation coming at end of month... So I am hoping to get one going in august... but I have to pick a date - maybe we could do Labor Day... if the weather holds up. Or sooner..
