Boat stays in gear

Fired the boat up for the first time in the driveway. Went to increase the RPms and the transmission engaged. Yes I pulled up on the safety "ring" or whatever it is called. Boat is a 06 Prostar 197 with a mcx.

Thanks

Safety ring?

Usually shifters have a "ring" that is designed to keep you from bumping the shifter into gear with your arm/leg.

There is also usually a "button" that either pushes in or pulls out to get neutral.

Ring and pulling up make me think the safety that is supposed to keep the shifter from moving, not the throttle/shift selector.

Well I feel stupid forgot about that. My 95 prostar had the exposed button for nuetral the 197 is buried in the throttle. Thanks
