Boring out a prop?
I've been keeping an eye out for a spare prop for my 88 Powerslot. I've seen on the local craigslist a number of 1" bore props, but not too many of the 1 1/8". Anyone know if it's possible to have a 1" bored out to fit the 1 1/8" shaft? I know it's a tapered fit, but I have a friend who runs a machine shop who might be able to help out. I'm just trying to see if I can open up my options.

Well, I think you'll have a bigger problem.
The 1" shafts were used with 1:1 transmisssions, and used something like a 13x13 prop. The 1-1/8" shafts were used with 1:1.5 Powerslot transmissions, and used something like a 14x18 prop. If you bore out a 13x13 and put it on your powerslot equipped boat, you'll be grossly underpropped - you'll hit redline on the engine at a speed in the mid-30 mph range. As an on-the-water spare, it'd certainly get you home, but I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't want to keep it bolted on any longer than necessary. I'd keep looking for the right prop for your boat. You should be able to find a 14x18, 13.5x17.5, or something similar pretty easily. |

Unless you're looking for a challange or a winter hobby I vote for going with Ski Dog's prop and getting it reworked.
Sometimes it's not if something can be done but more should something be done. In Chris Rock's words...... "You can drive your car with your feet but that doesn't make it a good idea". |
Duly noted. SkiDog, PM sent.

Edit: Sorry wrong thread.
|
a machine shop with a competent machinist can bore a prop no problem with key way and taper but as mentioned it won't be optimum except to get home

I'd be interested in that prop if gweaver isn't.

Sorry, I'm going to grab it as a spare.
