Starter needed for 77 S&S
Looking to find a reman starter for my "new" 1977 stars and stripes. Boat has a 351-rh rotation and is equipped with the Escort package. Not sure if that makes a difference??? Any links or part numbers would be helpful.
Also for question sake I see parts for PCM engines and such in Skidim but no Escort parts. Can these be interchanged? New to inboards so that may be a crazy question. Thanks! |
RH rotation? I would double check that, iirc it should be LH. As far as the 351w engine itself plenty of parts are interchangeable after all it's just a ford engine with the marinization items added later. Your on the right track with skidim they have a vast knowledge of inboards, although they can be a bit high on some parts.

Yes I don't know why I put rh but meant lh rotation. Thanks for the links. I am working up a Skidim order and will add the starter to my list.
Thanks! |
MC did put some RH engines in during the mid-late 70's, so I wouldnt necessarily dismiss the RH possibility based on what this forum thinks. Take a look at your engine/starter/prop and be sure!
RH would be reverse rotation and would require a CCW starter (LH = CW starter). If that is in fact what you need, they can be found new for <$150. |
I put an Arco starter in my '79 and would recommend it to anyone, a lot smaller but more powerful than original.
|
I am a fan of the Arco I put in my 81 as well

Arco makes both conventional and PMGR (permanent magnet gear reduction) starters. Theyre a brand, not a style.

Thanks for the heads up on the Arco starter. That is what I am leaning towards unless I can something similar. There was an older Ford starter in pieces in the boat when I bought it. Been searching the net with the part number on the cap, but haven't been able to come up with anything. May not have been a marine starter in the first place....

First you need to determine which rotation you need... but both conventional and PMGR starters are readily available for both rotations.
