Ipod

I am sure this has been a question of many but I need some input/answers. I am wanting a direct connect feature for my ipod. The head unit in my boat I believe is the Clarion CDM5. I have attempted to do a little research and from what I have found it appears this can be done with my head unit through an aux input in the back of the head unit. I am not wanting to replace the head unit as I have just added new speakers, sub, etc. and am strapped for cash. What do I need to get this done?

A forum on mymastercraft.com regarding the same topic (http://mymastercraft.com/Forum/view_...=17&category=2) said an ipod adapter kit must be installed. Is this correct? and if so where is the best place to get this? Also, if anybody has done this how hard is the install?

I look forward to any and all responses/help.

No you dont HAVE to have the ipod adapter. I have the same head unit in my boat and I just used an RCA cable to with a headphone jack on it. If you want to just control the songs and everything from your ipod this is all you need. IF you want to control the ipod and everything from the head unit you will need to install the ipod interface like you were talking about. Its a 10$ cable or a 150$ interface...your choice!

Ipod connector

I had a Clarion M475 and used the following adaptor to connect my Ipod unit to it. Perhaps you would use the same one?? I don't know.

Worked great and also charged the Ipod while in use. Good, clean connection.

mcrowe:

That's all I want is to be able to play it directly through the head unit...no need to be able to control with the head unit or to even charge (although charging would be nice). I was looking at the back of the head unit though and did not see exactly where you would connect a cable. Is the cable you are referring to just your generic cable that has 2 headphone input ends?

Your connector does look like it may be similar to something that would connect to the back of my head unit. Where did you get it at and how much is the cost?

http://3btech.net/3stmato2rcam.html is what you need, You should be looking for a cable hanging from the back of the unit with two female RCAs....

I have a CMD 5 and I can use the Aux connector which allows me to use any external device via a headphone style cable ... you will need to control music from the Ipod itself in that method.

I bought the CCA cable from Crutchfield for around $60 and that allows the unit to charge (classic IPOD - 32 GB) and be controlled via the Clarion headunit ... this is definitely awesome since the unit charges and the head unit does all the heavy lifting.

I also run my son's Nano that way but it does not receive a charge via the cable. I recommend you read the compatibility section of the cable on the Crutchfield site .... using the cable also keeps my AUX input open for any "guest devices".

Go with with RCA or 1/4" Aux connection then buy a suction cup iPod holder to hold the device. The interface on the Clarion is terrible so just use the ipod interface. Even better that that, if you have an iphone, then you can add Sirius Radio (2.99 a month), Navtronics, and have a phone to boot. Much better than adding all of the crap on the Clarion.
