Transmission Fluid Anomolies
 
I love my 225 Maristar more than anything. This 1998 has run perfect since I bought it 3 years ago. I keep up on all the maintenance and will do whatever it takes to keep my beast in great running condition.

Recently, I found an excessive amount of transmission fluid in the hull. I checked the level of the transmission fluid which seemed to be ok and the math of how much fluid was in the hull to how much was missing from the transmission did not seem to be adding up.

I went out this 4th of July weekend and wakeboarded to my hearts content. Monday, I checked the transmission fluid and it was - VERY LOW, and more fluid was in the hull. I again pumped all fluid out of the hull and the transmission preparing for a full transmission flush.

Before I finish the flush (put new fluid in) - what could be causing this, engine runs clean, but I am doing a full overhaul, new transmission fluid, new oil and filter, and new plugs and cables this Thursday.

I am also replacing the oil cooler as I was told to. Is this the right course of action ... Could it be anything else ... Does anybody have suggestions for the best plugs & cables, transmission fluid (ie, synthetic?) and Oil and filther (again Synthetic?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be leaking from the oil cooler, or it could be the hoses that go to and from it, so I'd replace those too while you're at it. Could also be the front or rear seals on the tranny (ouch), or sometimes there can be a leak from the seal where the shift lever goes through the housing.

Oil filter - anything non-Fram IMHO - for example Wix 51069 or Napa Gold 1069. Oil, anything that meets current Indmar recommendations for your model engine (CG-4/SJ or better). Current spec is CI-4 Plus. Note that this iteration of Rotella has less in the way of pressure additives (zinc) so if your engine has non-roller lifters, it might not be the best choice. You could use synthetic versions that meet those API specs, although there's no real advantage.

I had this problem on an '82 model. Changed the seals, no luck. The main shaft was worn. Had to replace the tranny. Too expensive to rebuild. Hope you have better luck. To check the seals you have to remove it. Try some stop leak to get thru the season and make it a winter project.
