Gremlins, 89 Tristar BB

Alright, after another good year about to close, my boat developed gremlins.

It runs great for about 30-45 minutes. Then, it will just die totally. If I let it sit for a little bit, anywhere from 15 seconds to 4 minutes, it will fire right back. It will run another 5 minutes or so and I repeat the process.

Initially, I thought it was the ignition coil, as it was a little warm. I replaced the coil and it's doing the same thing.

Too, today I noticed gauges and everything die when it cuts off. So, this would rule out ignition, right? I was thinking the coil and EI module were not tied in with the fuel, voltage, oil pressure, or temperature gauge, right?

I'm going to check connections tomorrow. anyone have any suggestions or recommend a place to start?

Bad ground cable perhaps?

Bump.

Checked and cleaned all ground wires. Cleaned wiring harness, switch wires, main circuit wires. I'm about to move to the wire that runs from the switch to the coil...

It acts like the boat just totally switches off. Then, it's fine a moment later.

If anyone is interested, it was the "on" connection on my ignition switch. It had corroded and was not making good contact.

I was interested.....been following along, glad it worked out. Electrical gremlins are the hardest to chase...

Sorry no one had any good advice for you. I knew it had to be either the ground or the power cable! :toast::uglyhamme

I just hate it when people don't post the solution to problems after soliciting the help of the forum.

Great to hear you fixed it. That is one to remember.
