3 blade or 4 blade ACME

OK - dinged my prop over the weekend and going to get another one (get the ding fixed and keep it as a spare). Boat is an X-9 with 310 Predator engine and was using a 3 blade ACME 13" diam 12 pitch. My question - is that prop best for skiing? Our focus has changed - we spend 80% on the slalom stick and wondering if a 4 blade would be better (since we don't use the ballast very often). The reason I asked is I put on my other spare (4 blade OJ - the stock prop) - and the wake seemed a little smaller. Any X-9 or 209 owners out there who can provide input? Thanks!!

I just called Acme and they set me up. I would just call them.

I did just that - they were very helpful. Sending me a prop to try - if I don't like it I can return it in 30 days for a switcheroo.

What are they sending you to try?

Go 3-blade! I've got a PS197 with the Predator and ran a 13x12 ACME 3-blade and its night and day performance above the stock 4-blade prop. It puts my WOT in the proper range, gives me good hole shot and gained me some top end footin' MPH

Good question - I was in the middle of something at work and forgot to write it down! DOH! Anyway, it arrives tomorrow - I'll give the full report as soon as I am able. Basically, ACME said this new prop will give me lower overall RPM's while skiing - which should make the wake smaller (but I will maintain a decent holeshot).

Interestingly, he told me that a 3 blade makes a bigger yet softer wake and a 4 blade makes a smaller but harder wake.

wiltok - With the OJ 4-blade did the wake "feel" harder as compared to the 3-blade? I find it interesting that lower RPM will make the wake smaller, had not heard that before. Lower RPM at skiing speeds will provide a softer feel (pull) providing the skier a chance to get ahead of the boat as opposed to higher RPM at the same speed, which will not allow the skier to get a head as the boat will feel like it is running away from the skier.

Slight Threadjack. Eric, what would you recommend for my '05 197 mcx 1.26:1?

EJ OJPROP 07-26-2007 08:37 AM

13.7 X 15 would be the standard propeller for that boat. It really depends on what, if anything , you want to change with regards to the performance. I have a few other options. Give me a call to discuss if you'd like.

We have two different prop threads going here.
So I will add my question to both.
I always thought a 4 bladed prop would out perform a 3. I have the prop that came on my 04 197 and it is a 4 bladed and has 13.7 X 19.5V COJ stamped on the hub. It does have the 1.5:1 transmission would that be the difference in the prop sizes
