WTB mid-to-late 90's Prostar 205
My kids want to start skiing/tubing!! I've done a limited amount of research on ski boats, and based upon what I've read, Mastercraft is the way to go. Looking to purchase a mid-to-late 90's Prostar 205 (open bow). Low miles, fresh-water-only and meticulously cared for are all A MUST. Budget is $15K (ABSOLUTE MAX), but would prefer to spend closer to $12K. I'm new to ski-boating(currently own an old pontoon boat), so any comments/suggestions on my boat of choice would be welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks.:)

94-95 prostar 205 is about your budget range.

Awesome boat (obviously because I have one!)

96+ will have just a little more room but the 95 and earlier will have the better ski wake.

Excuse my ignorance, but what specifically makes the 95 & earlier model have a better ski wake?

No problem. In 96, there was a hull change and there were a number of changes. The bottom got just a slight modification to allow it to handle the rough water a little better. They also raised the side rails so you have more freeboard. They also increased the width inside allowing for a little more room.

Now, it still has a great ski wake but if you were to compare the two, most would say the 92-95 era boats would have a better ski wake. The 96+ would handle the rougher water better, add some ballast and would also have a better wakeboarding wake, too.

Not a major difference but still worth noting when shopping. The earlier ones are a little tighter inside but I don't mind. If you get a chance, take a look at some in person.

I said 94-95 because those were the two years with fuel injection and I prefer that. The 92 & 93 were Ford, 351, carb engines. The 94 & 95 were GM 350 engines (with the optional LT1 engine).

Hey, Jeff...

I've been doing so much research, I'm getting dizzy. Any thoughts/comments on "Direct Drive" vs. V-Drive? Pro's? Con's?

Hey dreamin - DD - great for SKI, BF and maintenance and repair - OK for for wake - not good for surf.

On the V-drive - I'd shoot for a vortec 5.7 for the added HP and weight in the back of the boat and when you weigh it down for wake and surf. Maintenance not as easy - but you get an open feeling to the interior of boat. Toss in a tower and there is a bunch of space.

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between a Prostar 205 and Maristar, other than the drive (VD vs. DD)? Are the hulls different?

I don't know as much about a Maristar (first hand) but if it's a v-drive, generally speaking it will have more room than a DD (engine in back) and will generally ride better in the rougher water. They are also considered to be more favorable for wakeboarding but suffer definitely in the slalom area.

Pros and cons for both boats. You just need to decide what is important for you.

Pure slalom machine, prostar 205.

More family, general use, all around boat, V-drive or Maristar.

FYI - I have the 94 205 which is a slalom machine.....but I also have 3 kids and wife and although a little tight to move around, we do just fine. 205 is great for us because I know the wake is so nice. I would not want to suffer my ski wake for a larger boat (or V-drive). Personally, I would not buy a V-drive in any foreseeable future. My next boat would either be:

2003 197 Anniversary
Nautique 200 OB
MC's new Prostar OB

So, again, anyone, please excuse my extreme gnorance. Answers/confirmations to the following questions/assumptions are surely obvious to everyone on TeamTalk, but I'm a true newbie to ski-boating...

Skiing - low or minimal wake desired?

Wakeboarding - that's where you're on your knees and strapped to a short surfboard, and high or max. wake is desired to do tricks/flips?

Surfing - you twist, turn and hop while riding the top of the water curled up on your back (no board/ski of any kind)? Max. wake is desired to do tricks/flips?

Thanks in advance for anyone that's willing to answer/confirm what may be obvious to everyone but me.

Kneeboarding, whatever
Wake surfing, slow speeds, 10 mph very large wake

Well, folks, I'm excited to announce that I'm finally a Mastercraft Owner!! Found a '95 Maristar 200 VRS 275 HP EFI in excellent condition and only 532 hours. The only thing the mechanic said it needs is a new blower. It's making noises, and he said most likely that the motor bearings are shot.

Thanks again to everyone who responded to my questions. Not having owned a ski boat before, I am sincerely grateful for all the comments, suggestions and opinions I received. It was a huge help!

That said, I have another question...the ski pylon is currently located just to the left and back of the captain's chair, but I've seen where some Maristar's (typically a couple years or so newer) have the ski pylon located directly behind the back bench seat thru a notch in the sun deck. Is relocating the ski pylon to this position an option for my boat (i.e. are their mounting holes/additional floor backing at this location in a '95 Maristar)?
