Help with a new sub box please

Hello all:

I could use some advice on rebuilding a sub box:

Here is the old sub box:

Should I try to repair this and seal it with a marine epoxy?

Should I build a new one out of HDPE board? Something else?

All advice appreciated!

Thanks much, Steve.

Start new, use birch plywood, coat with epoxy/bedliner, and add feet to lift it up and keep it dry.

How thick of plywood? 1/2 inch or 3/4?

Thanks much. I want to get this done this weekend.

Steve.

Nothing there to repair, sorry. Yes, start fresh, but HDPE is not needed. Construction methods will get you more likes than the material used. That enclosure looks 100% raw on the inside and may a poor coating of something on the outside.

Steve.

3/4" MDF seems to work best for car stereo applications, so I would imagine the same thickness would be best if you're using plywood.

I used 3/4" MDF and sealed it inside and out with 3 coats of polyurethane, then carpeted it and used rubber feet to get it raised off the floor. Been going 3 years strong now.

A couple final questions

OK - my local wood shop only has 3/4 inch marine fir plywood.

Is this acceptable? It's got to be better than MDF right?

Second, what type of sealing liquid should I use? West Systems epoxy, polyurethane, or something else?

Thanks very much for all the help!

Steve

That plywood and epoxy will be awesome, and lightyears ahead of the MDF. Put some plastic feet on that bad boy and you'll be set.

Oh, and glue and screw everything together. Caulk the inside seams to keep it air tight.

What kind of sub was in there?

strangely it has a smaller amount of enclosed space than the old sub. Hopefully I can get close.

Steve.

OK - here it is:

Attachment 143236

3/4 inch marine plywood - three coats of West systems epoxy in and out, starboard spacer to keep it off the carpet.

Wish me luck - it goes in tonight!

Cheers, Steve
