Question for the mechanics

My wife has an 06 Malibu with 130K miles. She said it started to make a terrible clunking noise while turning the steering wheel left and sometimes right. I figured it was ball joints or tie rods gone bad.

I jacked it up this morning and checked it out. Ball joints are tight, tie rods are tight. No play in either.

Does anyone have suggestions? There was a recall on the steering column a few years back. Her car was in and it was replaced at the dealer.

Thoughts?

CV joints?

My first reaction is the CV joint. Sometimes the accordion boot on the front drive axle tears or gets brittle with age and dirt, grit, etc get in there and destroy the joint. And joints just wear out too. If you're handy with tools it is a DIY job. If it is indeed the CV joint, best just to get a rebuilt drive axle with new inner and outer CV joints; they are typically $125 - $250 depending on make/model. There's an axle shaft on each side, so you'll need to figure out which side is shot - roll down the windows and see if you can tell which side it's coming from. Hope this helps and good luck!

Wouldnt CV joints create a constant thumping or whomping noise? It is a single clunk when turning the steering wheel.

Yeah, it would be a thump, thump, thump, or click, click, click as it's spinning. By your description I wasn't sure if constant or just once during turning. In this case, I think Milk may be onto something with his links.

Pittman arm, idler arm, center link, etc. Have someone turn the wheel with the engine off while you're underneath, looking for loose connections and listening for the clunk.

The steering column may be loose, too.

something that works very well for isolating noises is to use a 2 or 3 foot piece of rubber hose as a make-shift stethoscope....
