Boat Engine Hours As Compared To My Truck?

I See Most People Try To Get Rid Of Boats Over 1000 Hours...i Have A 2005 Chevy Silverado With 4500 Hours That Runs Great. Absolutely No Problems What So Ever.

My Question Is: My Boat Has 781 Hours On It And Its A 1991. As Compared To My Truck Engine With 4500 Hours On It. Why Would I Not Expect To Get That Many On My Boat?

how do u figure 4,500 hours?

I think there a few school of thoughts on this, but just take this as a grain of salt.

I usually ride at 22mph ... and putt around mostly when not riding. So lets say my average speed is 20mph... my boat has 1,000 hours on it, which makes it 20,000 miles. Nothing right?

Then theres the whole single gear issue, the motor is sitting at 3,000 - 3,500 rpm while doing this average speed while our cars can upshift and rev lower.

Then there is the elements of being on the water (assuming your boat is in the water or on a lift)...

I like my theory of 1,000 hours = 20,000 miles though =D

My Truck Has An Hour Gauge On It. It Shows Engine Hours Since The Truck Was New, Mileage And Odometer

I would think mainly due to the high torque and high RPM's that your boat is running. There are very few times that a ski/wakeboard boat are being run at say "highway speeds" or 1800-2000 RPM's. Not to mention the constant start and stop that a boat goes through.

Or Another Friend Of Mine Said....you Change The Oil In Your Truck Every 3500 Miles Right? Well You Change The Oil In The Boat Every 50 Hours.

781 Hours On My Boat Divided By 50 Is =15.62 Rounded Off To 16. 16 X 3500 Miles = 56000 Miles On My Boat Engine. On A V-8 Engine, Thats Nothing.

Is That Another Way To Look At It? Ive Heard A Different Opinion From Everyone I Talk To. Whos Right?

dont think the oil change idea has much validity, but what do i know...

anyone else know about the hours?

JLeuck64 07-13-2011 03:17 PM

Putting lots of hours on an engine (vehicle or boat) doesn't bother me as long as I am the one doing the maintenance during that time. Buying something with lots of hours on it, not knowing the maintenance history, now that bothers me.
