"Dirty Neutral" 1990 Prostar 190

Just purchased a 1990 Prostar 190 - Hour meter shows 409 hours - I have only had it out now 3 times and it has developed what I have read as a "Dirty Neutral" - It seems intermittent at first but but was persistent at the dock and could not get it to stop when trying to trailer the boat last night.

To be clear, the driveline is turning with enough torque to move the boat forward at idle when in neutral. Not just a slow friction turn, it appears to be staying in gear. Linkage does not appear to be the issue.

Concerned for obvious safety reasons as well as the challenge trying to dock and land without a reliable neutral. Other threads suggest a rebuild is required. Any other tips to cure this? Local shop is several weeks out to get work done.

Anyone recommend a good shop in Oregon?

which trans velvet drive? I recently read a thread where it was the control valve - but this was on a velvet drive - manuals are in the library here -

Thanks for the prompt reply, I will get the exact specs on the trans tonight and post. Pulled the boat home in disgust and had to sleep on it. We went out to adjust the carb, got it dialed in and then the neutral issue appeared at the dock. Love the boat and will have it 100% just don't know when and how much it will cost me yet,

Borg Warner Velvet Drive Model 10-17-004

I have a Borg Warner Velvet Drive Model 10-17-004, tinkering on the trailer it seems like the transmission won't go into neutral so I won't start it dry as I don't want to fry my cutlass bearing too.

In need of someone in my area who can rebuild or I need to send it out. Removal looks straight forward enough.

I remember years ago we have that issue at our team boat.
A rotated bearing closed a oil duct....

You could try just changing the fluid before a rebuild.

Spray water at the bearing if you want to run on trailer?

You're right. That transmission is easy to pull. There's a shop in Ohio that was recommended here a while back that does good work. There's also another thread with a slightly newer prostar a few weeks ago that had the same issue. That guy was able to buy a new transmission for less than a rebuild kit! Shop around a little, hopefully you can find a deal too!

Ohio shop - Fantastic Finish Marine

I called but no answer, left a message with the website. Just to check on pricing and turn around time. Would like to have this issue fixed before Memoral Day weekend.

Will try replacing fluid before I pull the transmission.

Thanks for all the replies!
