Some clarification, so this doesn't become a you're driving too fast thread -

I could pull it (my 08 Tahoe) 75 up and over with no problems at 3/4 throttle because it had a proper downshift, plenty of power, no problems, hardly felt it was there.

This Yukon I was going 40 mph pedal to the floor (in tow/haul mode) in the right hand lane with flashers on while it dropped below 2k rpm's before downshifting. On the way back I did it in Manual and didn't have the downshifting issues because I was controlling it, but it did feel like I was pushing it a bit.

A local shop suggests a "super chip flashpaq" to reprogram the computer when I am towing. He thinks I am programed to be in what he called "economy mode". It sounds like a good idea especially when I am done towing I can easily reprogram it back to "economy mode" as a grocery getter. Any thoughts on this idea?

Something is wrong. Take it to the shop.

The tow includes a large climb over parleys summit. This gmc would not down shift the way my 08 Tahoe did. I was in tow/haul mode and had the gas pedal down all the way and the down shift took forever. I could do 65 or so up and over the summit in my 08 and I was struggling to be at 50 in the gmc due to the fact it didn't down shift to keep the speed consistent. What am I missing

Your truck is broken, take it to gmc dealer as it's under warranty and don't do any aftermarket programming, they'll void your warranty if they find the program and blame the transmission failure on the program(trust me I work for a chevy/nissan dealer and the domestics are always looking for ways to turn warranty into customer pay). To me sounds like you have a valve body or tcm issue.

Definitely take it in to be looked at. I bought a '12 Avalanche about 8 weeks ago. 5.3 but with the 3.42 LS gears. This thing will downshift unloaded on any decent hill on most highways around DFW.

My '11 Suburban has same powertrain and rear gear Pulls very well up and down the hills here in Austin.

Definitely bring it to the dealer.

65? Hahahahaha. Who drives 65 on the interstate? Mine tows great at 80.

Not my vehicle, and at that moment I wasn't driving. Typically, I agree. I just picked up my x2 and drove from Arkansas to Michigan with a 2500 6.0 Express Van. I did a nice and steady 65 mph, and it rocked. 14 mph towing it, I was very impressed.

The 6.0 and 6 spd were great.

Done 90 plus with many boats couldn't imagine going 65 on the highway with a tow boat

Might just have to get used to the 6 speed trans....I just traded in my2008 gmc Sierra with 4.8L 4speed auto trans for a 2013 chevy silverado with 5.3L 6speed auto trans and it feels sluggish!!! I talked to a gmc service writer about my concern, and it is a common complaint! I've got 200 miles on the new truck and am learning how to drive it better. I haven't towed with it yet though....I was disappointed with my new truck also.... The more I drive it the more I am getting used to the characteristics of the new system.

definitely something wrong with that truck. Easy to fix though. Drive it to a Ford dealer and trade it in on an Expedition. Problem...solved.
