Boat only starts with the neutral knob in

My 87 PS190 will only start with the neutral knob pushed in. It just started doing this. I donít think this is a very safe condition. Has any one else experienced this? What do I do to fix it?

Thanks for the help

Ya there is nothing electric at the throttle or knob. And nothing moves in the back when you move the knob in or out.

Does the 87 have a lanyard safety near the throttle or is it over by the key?

Thank you

As the two previous posts indicate, there's nothing electrical at the neutral button- open the engine cover and have someone look at the shift lever when you do this, to make sure the lever isn't moving at all. Do you move the throttle when you start, maybe to give it some gas after sitting? My guess is that the linkage at the helm has some friction that causes the shift cable to move.

Do your gauges come to life when you turn the key to ON, regardless of the neutral button's position?

Use a flashlight and look behind the coaming pad where the throttle is mounted and if the safety switch's wires pass where the linkage moves, it may be chafed/cut and the neutral button could be completing the circuit.
