I recently bought a 94 Prostar 190. I have had it out a few times now, and it really seems to be sucking up the fuel. Today I was out for about three hours, about two hours on the hour meter and went through 3/4 of a tank. I skied once for less then 15 minutes and the rest was easy driving and puttin around. Is this normal for the 351W, anything I can do to help the problem.

Hmm, that does seem like a little too much. My '93 Prostar with the 351W burns around 4 gallons per hour on average.

Are you running really rich? You can check the plugs to see if they are black and wet. Also, black smoke from the exhaust would indicate a rich condition.

Maybe you're just too heavy on the throttle!!! ;)

Another possibile answer is your gas gauge giving incorrect readings. A lot of us have had problems with the sending units in particular. A quick check can be done with a dowel or stick, I have one tucked away with markings for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full. My gauge is working OK now but I have done several disassembly of the sender and if I have any doubts, the stick comes out.

That's a good idea. I need to get a dowel to check mine. I just had a new type sending unit put in mine and I want to see how accurate it is set.

Fill the boat up as much as possible (without spilling). Ski, tow, or cruise for 2 hours. If you use between 8 and 10 gallons to FULL again, you are normal.

Thanks for all the replies. I will make that stick and check. I have to say I think the guage is right because its taking 12-14 gallons or more at the pump. Oh and East Tex your right I screwed up its a '92. Mixed up boats and years.

When you lift up the engine box, do you smell gas as if there's a leak? I know they kind of always smell a little gassy, but more so lately?
