Driver Inattention Blamed for Boat Crash in Delta

The driver of a pleasure boat says he took his eyes off the water for just a moment, but it was long enough to lose control of the vessel. With seven people on board, the boat slammed into a levee along Brannan Island Road in the Delta.

Three children, who were sitting at the front of the boat, were injured, including an 11-year-old girl who complained of paralysis. She was airlifted to Oakland Children's Hospital.

The people on the boat are from Southern California. They had spent about eight hours on the Mokelumne River and were ending their day when the accident happened. The boat's driver said he took his eyes off the waterway.

"Bottom line was I wasn't paying attention," said Dirk Davis. "The kids were up front. I was talking to the adults, turning back, looking at them. I guess I drifted off."

The boat slammed into rocks and drove up the embankment at an estimated 40 miles an hour and slid more than 150 feet before coming to a stop on the other side of the levee. The impact was so strong it snapped the boat's propeller.

A 6-year-old and a 9-year-old suffered minor cuts and bruises in addition to the 11-year-old. All three were thrown from the boat.

The boat was going between 40-45 and hit the levee went about 50ft up a rocked side over a 2 lane highway and ended up on the other side about a foot from going down the other side about 50ft into a field! At first I thought it fell off a trailer on the road!

How do you slam into a levee after taking your eyes off the water "for just a moment" ?

They are very lucky it didn't turn out worse than it did.

Between Moore's Riverboat and B&W! They were almost in to take out at B&W when MR. I only took my eyes off the river for a second crashed! Problem is he was on the wrong side of the river or he wasen't watching for a long time to cross from one side of the river to the other! I am always watching ahead of me especially with kids in the bow!!!!

Live and Let Die. The greatest boat chase scene in the movies. Right up there with the Bullitt car chase scene IMHO.

Here's a fun fact: That scene was filmed in and around the New Orleans area. Some of the police officers that were used were New Orleans Levee Board Officers. My father was a Levee Board Officer at the time but was not picked to be in the movie.

That shot was actually taken on Hwy 11 at Carr Drive in Slidell, LA. The shot where one of the boats ends up in a pool was at a friend of my sister's off of Bayou Liberty in Slidell as well.
