I have a voltmeter in an '86 S&S that only shuts off if the battery is disconnected. I've had the guage pod off and played with the wiring a bit but I can't figure out what wire is what to get it to turn off when the ignition is off. Does anybody know if a wiring schematic exists for boats this old? Anybody else run into this? Thanks.

It has to be at the key. I would replace the ignition (key switch with a new one, they are fairly cheap and you can get it at a good autoparts store.

On my 94 it is the purple wire that goes to the volt gauge.

First to possible answer your question I need to ask one, actually three.
1)Have you had any wiring changes lately?
2)Did it shut off with the ignition off before?
3)How many wires are attached to it????

Check the wiring to the voltmeter. My guess is that the battery lead goes to it instead of the ignition lead coming from the ignition switch.
