I sold my beloved '95 PS 205 in June '03 and have been without a boat for 2 summers now. I am going to replace it with an X30. I was wondering what years to avoid, if any. Is one year better than another? I plan on buying used and will travel anywhere in the continental US to get the boat. The new ones are just too expensive. I have narrowed it down to a 2002 X30. What were the engine options that year?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom-If I go without boat for 2 summers(bumming sets from my friends of course), will I be able to make this kind of upgrade?

Tom,

Base engine that year was a 310hp TBI. Next one up is the LTR - 330HP. 'can't remember what the next one was, but there was at least one bigger.

Haven't heard anything negative about the 2002 X-30.

Good luck!

I am a big fan of the 385hp LQ9 in this boat. Given the recall list on the 330hp LTR I would proceed cautiously. Make sure that ALL of the recall campaigns have been completed. Also check and see if the transmission has had the “double lipped” output seal installed along with the transmission vent. I would hate to see your “welcome back” be a leaky transmission.

Stay away from the 310hp TBI in this application…under powered particularly given the amount of people/ballast it can accommodate.

By the way all of the recalls can be found here: http://www.mymastercraft.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=997bbfcd3c00a334bae90c99052299b7

Tex -

Actually, my 2 small kids are prompting the move to a large boat. I loved my PS 205. I bought it brand new but it was just too small to go cruising in Lake Washington. When was the MCX engine offered? 2002 or 2003?

Here's a low hour 2003 with the MCX in the SF bay area:

Tom,
I have an 04 X30 that I would like to sell. It is posted in the marketplace section of this web site. If interested make me an offer, I have an X-Star on order.

H.L.,

I checked the link you provided cautioning for LTR recalls, since I have a 1991, and could only find the transmission vent replacement recall that may affect other engines, and the altenator bracket. There is a warning to check the brass oil pump gear. What recalls are you referring to? I want to make sure mine get done. Thanks.

1) Alt recall for the bracket and hardware in addition to alignment, pulley and belt. (2 seperate recalls)
2) Oil pump drive gear must be inspected at each oil change until it wears sufficiently enough to warrant replacement (per Indmar). This is the big one!
3) Trans vent (all V-Drives)
4) Big item to watch on ALL V-Drives until 2004 model year is a leaking output shaft seal.

Davidx30 -

I saw your red X30 and it is absolutely beautiful. However, my reasoning for looking for a 2002 model year is based on price. Also, my purchase window is Sept. 2005 thru April 2006. I know I am a little premature but waiting another year to year-and-a-half allows me to meet my target price of $42Kish. Hence, the reason for the 2002 model.

Thanks for the input on the recalls. I asume the MCX engine did not become available until 2003 model year.

I been to the factory 3 times in Tenn. but can not remember the engine options for the past few years. I definately will not go for one that has the 310 hp TBI. It has to be aleast the LTR or MCX and possibly the LQ9 or L81.

Thanks H.L. I have the first three covered but didn't know about the last one. Is that a relatively easy replacement for mechanically inclined or better left to a dealer? Also, would you recommend replacement as cheap insurance, or don't fix unless it's broken? Thanks again!

You'll need a dealer to do it...unless you have a garage equipped to pull the engine and transmission assembly.

Wait till/if it goes bad, but if you see tranny fluid in the bilge it is a safe bet that this is where it came from.
