View Full Version : transmission rattle

I have a '99 Maristar with Hurst tranny. Bought it with 100 hrs on it in '02. Since day 1 it has had a low RPM rattle both in forward and reverse. My buddy, who also has a '94 Maristar, shifts smooth as silk. Someone mentioned changing to a different type of tranny fluid but the local boat shop said they only put in what manufacturer recommends. Is this a death rattle??? It does seem to be getting a little louder. Any thought or suggestions?

Sure it's comming from the trans? It definately goes away in nuetral? If so maybe alignment, shaft play, coupler, strut bearing. If you can hear it from the trans this is all moot! If still there in Nuetral there are a few other possibilities. :twocents:

yes, it is quiet in neutral and disappears as you accelerate. No vibration is detectable at cruising speeds. Any other thoughts on how to differentiate between your suggestions? I'm ready to winterize after this wed. last run down the river.

Just to clarify the 94 has a walter-v drive/BW transmission.. The Hurth came later...

Check your coupler bolts.. Mine were all loose.. You need to check EACH bolt to do this..

I would also check your strut bearing/bushing

it could be your flex plate
