View Full Version : Think a transmission cooler isn't needed???

One of our vehicles ran into a little bit of a problem on the way down to the Ozarks for the Midwest Coast Summerfest Event. This was a friend of mines truck (a 1997 Tahoe) that was pulling an 05' X-2. He said that the temperature gauge showed everything was normal, but when he looked in the rearview mirror he noticed smoke, and decided to pull over. After he pulled over he noticed flames under the vehicle with the transmission glowing, and then everyone got out of the vehicle. Within a minute there where flames 12 feet high. By the time we circled around and got back, the firetrucks had already put it out. Luckily everyone was alright and only the vehicle suffered the damage.

Glad no one was hurt! Did the MC being towed behind suffer any damage?

No damage to the MC....got a nice shot of Kyle, "relieving" himself with the State Patrol looking on. :D They were pretty cool with us. Since we had three cameras going and a video camera.

Quick question

Was that the factory tranny or had it been replaced?

I had to replace mine in my 97 Tahoe.

Note sure on that...could be the factory tranny. Kyle is about as laid back as it comes. He loses all his stuff, his car burns up, and a 5 hour trip to the Ozarks takes 12. So what do you do? Continue on and take 3rd in the Pro Mens Division, getting beat out by Cory B., and Rusty! :D

that must have been really scarey. I can't imagine watching it go up in flames with the MC still attached and not being able to do anything about it other than pee on the tires. :)

A very good reason to make sure your tow rig has a trans cooler.....

And showing the cops how much of a "MAN" you are....."priceless"......:D

Second thing I added after a trailer hitch was the transmission cooler (all within 3 days of owning the truck).
