View Full Version : Feel the Need....The Need for a Bimini?

06-05-2006, 07:29 PM
I bought a Prostar 190 with mini flex tower last winter. Going into the summer months I am debating on getting a bimini. Local MC dealer quoted about $850 installed but I have a local shop that will do for around $600.

Just curious how often people use their bimini and if you would recommend getting one or if its just a waste of $ on this type of boat.

BTW live in the NW but plan to do Shasta trips (going next week - will be 90+) annually and trips to Central Oregon where it is similar. Just trying to figure out if they are worthwhile investment or not.

After being in Jrandol's boat(s) with the bimini and Footin's boat I'm sold on the bimini...

My bimini is up 99% of the time in the summer months. I wouldn't own a boat without one.

It was 110 here yesterday. I would probably be dead right now if it weren't for the bimini!

Bimini is up everytime we are out. Wife and kid could not survive without it. In Arizona during the summer it is a must have! :firejump:

I am seeing a trend here. Anyone buy from someone other than direct through MC? If so, what kind of pricing is reasonable to pay for these things?

I originally got mine to keep the kids out of the sun but now I use it all the time.

They are a necessity! I'm pretty fair and have young children. I spent some good coin on a Johnson Bimini Top and it is great. I highly recommend Johnson. They are considerably less than $850.

I have a factory bimini that is tower mounted. I couldn't live without it. It is never off....never. I leave it up 100% of the time.

I do treat it with the 303 fabric stuff once a year or until it quits beading. Those suckers are not cheap!

One thing...alot of the newer ones are mounted way up high. That makes it nice to move around the boat but lets alot of sun in around it. Mine is fairly low, which gives alot more coverage.

I am not sure which is better, but something worth considering if you have the choice of where to mount it.

I always have mine up! If you need a second opinion ask the my other half who is suffering from sun poisoning as we speak! Sat out all day listening to the Indy 500 with my yard gnome under my bimini! :D

I have a mini-tower and the factory bimini and I have to give a thumbs-up to the quality of the factory setup. All stainless, very solid. When they came out I think Shane Bonifay made a comment in an interview that it was the first bimini he saw that didnt flap at barefoot speed. (and it doesnt - it is as tight as the convertible top on your new Corvette)

Tru dat for the comments on the MC factory tops. My new to me X7 has it and I am very impressed with the fit. Don't know if MC makes one that will fit your boat, but if not, Johnson Bimini is a great alternative.

Ditto the rest of the responses. COuld get by a little better w/o one up north, but still nice to get out of the sun!
Haven't had one the first couple trips this yr due to putting on a tower and my new one hasn't come in yet. It's been rough. Lotta sun out on the water.
I have ordered from towerbiminis.com (Barrios Upholstery), to fit the tower. Have heard good reviews of them. Std price is $715, incl all hard supports w/ quick pin connections (no straps), color matched storage boot. Mine is running $785 w/ 2 tone stripe in fabric.
Will update w/ a pic when I get it in (Thurs hopefully).
