View Full Version : Steering stiff?

Guys, I was out on a 2003 X7 tonight, and the steering was STIFF! It was definetly tight turning to the right, but I had to really lean into it to turn to the left.

I greased the rudder when we pulled to boat out, but is there an adjustment on the cable that I am missing? Or is it just time to replace the cable? The boat has under 200 hours.

And I'm in sales.....not service so don't give me any trouble with this thread. I'll ask our service dept. in the morning, but wanted to see what you guys thought.

I'll have to look for the grease zerks on the steering cable, I only hit the rudder location.

Reading thru the one I posted it sounded like a new cable was the recipe to success. No???

Pretty much, yes. I'll grease it to see what the outcome is, but the long term fix is a new cable.

So, anybody know the price of a new cable?

I think you pretty much just have to give the boat away at that point. ;) :D

I'd say add another $295 as it will need a new rudder as well........ the 06' rudder :D

I had stiff steering a few years ago while I was on vacation. Actually, it was coming on for a while. I went to the local MC dealer and he didn't have one, but said go ahead and use it, it won't break. I broke the next day. I was skiing and my daughter was driving. Made a nice, tight circle. I swam back to the boat and then layed on the platform and reached under and held the rudder to get back to the dock. Powering on to load was a treat.

I went back where I bought it new. I had everything out and loose at both ends. He had the cable and the two of us replaced it in about an hour. Cost about $130.00 complete. Estimate at the first dealership was $400.00 to $500.00 to install. Glad I waited.

The new cable is sweet.

Ok - you are WAY braver than I am. I think I would have picked up the floor, and held the rudder arm from INSIDE the boat.
