I need your opinion,

Which option would you pick if you were buying a boat ? 350 MCX or 310 horse engine with the power slot ? This is for a 197 prostar.

Thanks.

350 MCX. I've had both and given the choice, and if you are willing to spend the extra $$$, then you can't go wrong with the MCX.
Are you on a private lake with a short set-up? If so, then the combo of the MCX and gear reduction tranny is great.

Why choose? Do both.

What exactly does power slot do?

If someone could explain it to me ;)

Power slot is a gear reduction drive, in the old boats it was 1.5 to 1, ie engine turns 1.5 times prop turns once.

Currently powerslot transmissions are more like 1.23 to 1, although i'd have to look up the new ratio.

By doing this the engine can turn a larger prop, but does so more slowly, the result being more low end grunt and better acceleration.

Origionally powerslots came out because some of the larger skiers with their old school techniques were out pulling the boats and they were loosing boat times through the course.

Standard trans are 1:1 non reduction running a smaller prop. Fine for most people, but on private ski lakes with short set ups before the course you need to get the boat up to speed quickly, and the gear reductions help with this.

Does the lower ratio on the newer boats come from better hull, engine and prop design?

So with powerslot, you lose some top end, in picking up speed on the low end.

Barefooters and hardcore slalom people would want powerslot right.. ?

I would not think barefooters would want to loose top end.
I'm not sure going to more horse power would ever be a bad thing.
Other than maybe a slight change in wake.

The dealer has a 2005 197 with a 310 horse engine and power slot. It has great discount, but I always want one with the MCX. I don't want to buy a boat with a discount and regret that I did not have what I want.

In that case go ahead with the 310 and the Slot. That is a nice combo. Ski it and drive it. If you like it buy it.

Brian is 100% correct. Put both boats in the water and see for your self. It might be a pain if your dealer is not on the water, but it will be worth all the time. Good Luck! :toast:

mcx 1:1 or rtp 1.5:1 (slot)
either are great combos!

If I am making a 40,000 purchase, the dealer better be willing to let me test that boat.. sorry, but a test drive would be necessary for me.

I learned that it was hard to find alot of 197's laying around on dealer lots, let alone optioned differenly sitting side by side ready for a test ride. It took some doin, but I drove them all and skiid some of them

CC, Supra, Bu, MC(209,197TT,197rtp1:1,X7mcx1:1 and a few more)

I think (IIRC) this is for the V-drive machine.

PS 1.52:1 is still in use.

IMHO, 310 with the slot will do fine to suit anyone's needs. This will allow a low end range of work where it is most needed. After 36 - 42 MPH, the HP will make no difference. The slot will track better.

I won't own another boat without gear reduction. It's great when pulling slalom skiers. I'm on a small private lake but wished for it many times before I was on the private lake.

350 MCX with the Powerslot

But if you can only get one of your options, on resale the MCX will be better than the 310 w/ slot (IMO as a buyer) - ask MYMC or Jim@Baws, if I remember right MYMC orders all of his 197's with powerslot for inventory, and orders non slot boats on special order.

And, in case you were wondering, SkEeNateak puts gear reduction on all of their 196's - 1:1 is not even an option.

I agree, but I wouldn't own a 197 with less than 350hp either:)

Why is that? Is it because of more people in the boat, or a 197 is just a larger boat to push through the water?
My 86' is 240hp (stock) with a 1:1. Great topic! Very interesting stuff.

yeah, I'd wager your 86 is faster than my 06 ... I'm pretty sure my old 87 could run down the 06 in a footrace too (heavier, more wetted surface)... I'm a whore for horsepower, plux the MCX is nice and shiny:) As for liking the slot, winter left me at 225+ ... and I'm not getting any smaller, so I like the pull out of the water (especially since the water is cold here into July)

As for not owning w/ less than 350 ... I doubt I feel the extra 40 hp, but I will feel it on resale.

I skiid the mcx/slot in an 04 TT boat for awhile and mine is now the MCX/1:1 I cannot tell alot of difference so maybe the ETX manifolds made up a bit of the difference (seat of the pants) ?

Ric, you have nicer weather, your women wear swimsuits year round, you get to ski at a lake with a course ... when I sit thru winter and stare at my boat the only thing I can say -gdmit, I love my powerslot:) Truth be told, will you be getting powerslot on your new 2008 197?

WHY WAIT til 08? If erkle will get me some good numbers together I can have me a red TT boat :steering:

Didn't mymc say that 08 was the new hull year (or at least a hull mod)? But I guess you better get an 07 since your 05's 2 year AWSA rating will run out before the 08's are here, plus, since mc only submits slot boats now, well, I know what you are gettin':) Hey, my brother in law is in town, I may get out of the house and be away from my computer as much as possible, if I don't catch the rest of you, be safe!

Only one problem with waiting till 08...... you better have ALOT of extra cash stashed for the purchase. Catalytic Converters will make the boats nasty exspensive. They are required starting in 07.

Just for everyone's information, all MCX engines for 2007 MY (July 2006)will have catalytic converters. The RTP-1 is scheduled to get Cat's in 2008 and the rest of the line will get them in 2009 MY. Boat testing with the catalyst exhaust manifolds is so far showing better acceleration and top end equal to an engine with the current ETX manifolds.

Look also for a new 6.0L engine for 2007. Better torque, better HP, no more required closed cooling. 2007 is going to be a great model year to buy a MasterCraft!!!

Any years a good year to buy a MC!! :firejump:

I'd think the testing (R&D) for the 07 MY will make price increases larger than past years. Can you confirm my theory?

The price of the engine will go up but I think you will be surprised at the amount.
