G/F dragged me to a party friday where a buncha her girls were gettin together so the guys played poker. sounds simple right? I show up with a couple hundred and some beers and figure what the hell.
These guys have a tournament table layout, fancy casino chips and a laptop showing timeframes for "blinds" and payouts for the top 3 players, needless to say this rookie walked into a minefield. If figured, hey, I've seen this on TV, I can play this... WRONG.
Payed my entry and got outta there with 3rd place though!

The host was cool but the guy who told us he was a pro and a tournament player etc, dealt cards like my 8 year old and taught guys to play in the same manner that booger taught guys to play poker on revenge of the nerds!

If you look around the table, and you can't tell who the sucker is. It's you!

Hey, can you IL guys get a beer called Schmaltz Alt by the Schell Brewery?
Doug, I'm pretty sure I have seen Schmaltz Alt in the stores up here in Minnesota, the brewery is not too far from Minneapolis/St. Paul. I can check if you'd like. I might be able to ship some to you if you're interested.

I've likely had it before, back in the day when some buddies and I started going to a bar called "Old Chicago" where if you drank 100 different beers you'd get your name on the wall. I think I'm up there twice, and one of my buddies did it 3 times. :vomit: Needless to say, I've had a lot of different beers. It is hard to keep them all straight! When harassed by friends/family about how much money I spent, I just say it sure was more interesting than having the same beer everytime I went to the bar. The justification worked for me! :toast:
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

sizzler
11-28-2005, 08:53 AM
tex ....tested them out this weekend.....fantastic....

started off lunchtime..took some friends to watch Arsenal(soccer)..carried on into the evening...and it was welcome when you did not have to rush for the 11-0-clock bell.....stayed in the pub till about half-one and went home......not all pubs are open all day.....lots in the big cities are,,,but in the rural areas its business as usual.....

there will be a lot of loutish behaviour for a while ,but it will be a good thing in the end and stop us having to gulp our drinks

Watched it on the ipod on the way to Houston last week. The dude abides.

So, I go to the mailbox today and I find a handwritten letter on legal paper stuffed into a personal stationary envelope. The letter says, in no uncertain terms, Hello, my name is _, my wife __ and I want to buy your house at [address]. Please call. Lists a number, fax number and an email. I looked up the return address, which matched the name. Went and checked out his current residence and decided he may be in the right ballpark.

I was caught a bit off guard, but I plan to drop him an email tomorrow thanking him for his letter, informing him that my house is not on the market, but could be if I were properly motivated.

Interesting turn of events. So how much % wise do people who do this tend to pay over market value? My late father bought the house my mom currently lives in using this method (but having his realtor go up and knock on the door). So I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that someone else would give it a try. I mean, I like my house.

That's interesting DOug. I would ask him to make a offer, you never what someone is thinking, and then consider what it would take for you to move with the baby and all.

We're doing Valentine's at home tomorrow night. Haven't figured out creative side dishes yet, but steak is on the menu. It will be marinated in Argentine Chimichuri sauce for 4--6 hours prior and flash broiled on the grill. Melts in your mouth.

OK, I'm trying to find out the freezing point of different drinks and I end up reading a long long web site.....

Men of the Ancient world began to make alcoholic beverages not because they wanted to become intoxicated, but for more practical reasons. One reason was that there were very few ways in which food could be preserved. The people of those times found that grape juice soon spoiled, but that the fermented juice, or wine, would keep. The alcohol produced by the fermentation stopped the growth of the bacteria which spoiled the juice. They also noticed that persons who drank fermented liquors did not become sick as often as those who drank water or unfermented beverages. This was not because alcoholic drinks themselves were healthful. But many of the springs and wells of Europe and Asia were impure, and the drinking of the water sometimes caused sickness and death. This may have been why Saint Paul said, "Use a little wine for they stomach's sake". Some early peoples, such as the Indians, never learned to make alcoholic beverages.
Brewing and wine making were especially important during the Middle Ages. Beer and ale were the principal beverages of the poor. Wines in great variety were served at the tables of the rich. Because wine was used to celebrate the sacrament of the Mass, the Roman Catholic monasteries preserved the secrets of wine making after the fall of the Roman Empire. The nobility also kept wine-making recipes, and wine was one of the products with which the lords paid their debts under the feudal system ..
