View Full Version : EFI engine will only start w/cracked throttle??

EFI 310 Predator - start in neutral and engine catches but dies. Crack the throttle (disengaged of course) and it starts and runs normally (actually the RPM seems a little low - and it will run normally after running with fast idle for about a minute). New fuel pump was just installed by dealer. Any ideas??

In case anyone is wondering (and it looks like nobody was :) - the boat needed a new IAC sensor (whatever that is). Let the season begin!!

Sorry, looks like we missed this thread :(

Anyways, great news!

Idle Air Controller - works in conjunction with the TPS, throttle position sensor, to set the computer to a given fuel map for idle conditions. This changes as soon as you move the throttle off idle, changes the position of the TPS, etc.

Thanks for the explanation - really appreciate it. Do you know why it would "go bad". Act of God??

It's electronic, it happens. I'm not sure where it is on your particular engine, but depending on if it's close to the PCV(crank case breather back to intake, TBI, air meter) they can also get very dirty. Some cars have an IAS, idle air stabilizer, and you can clean them sometimes and get by.

That makes sense. The dealer said they tried to clean it - no dice so they replaced it. Thanks again for your insight - really appreciate it.
