You big-boat rudder folks weren't kidding about the effect of the '06 rudder on the big boats. It's not even the same boat from a handling perspective. It doesn't pull at all - absolutely dead neutral - and it steers with one finger throughout the entire speed range. It steers easier than my 350 I/O, which has true power steering.

I am amazed!!

I would consider that rudder to be a highly desirable upgrade to the last few model-year X30/230VRS.

I will second Bigmac's thoughts. I just got done putting my X30 on my boat lift but took it out for the first time this year. I installed the '06 rudder a few days ago and tested it today. This is a totally new boat. It handles like my '95 PS205. This thing is great and worth every penny and then some.

That is awesome! So glad you guys are enjoying the upgrade. I am still amazed at how much better the steering is, glad you are finding the same improvement! :D

Can you post a picture of this new 06 rudder? I'm intrigued.

Can all the pre-2002(or 3) owners join? We got the 06 rudders as standard equipment.

You mention big boat guys. Which boats come with the larger rudder?

does it also increase control while backing?? if so, that alone would warrant my upgrading.

The " '06" rudder looks like the one they used before they went to the small one.

Check this thread (http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=6007&highlight=rudder+x-30), starting about post 75, MYMC has the breakdown of which boats get the big boat rudder.

mbeach, I find handling at very low speeds to be much improved. I am not sure I would say it backs better particularly, just that it's more responsive in general. I don't know, I've never driven anything but an inboard and backing up has never really bothered me, since I don't know any better. :o Hopefully someone else will come along and give you a better answer.

I have the 06 rudder also on my 2001!

Tom and Leroy are men ahead of their time...

Ironic that I had to get a new rudder to make my 2004 handle as well as a 2001.

Bigmac,

It does make a world of difference, doesn't it!

Mine seems to track straighter now that I filed the rudder slightly.
I havn't tried any high speed runs yet though.

I'm getting ready to re-pack the rudder on my '85. I'm afraid that I'm going to find that the old rudder is worn out, if so, will the new rudder fit, and will it be an improvement. If it won't I'm thinking of a tunable rudder of some sort, anyone know of one that will fit?

The handling at slow speeds is greatly improved, as is the tracking in a straight line - it feels really solid while towing riders. I did not notice too much improvement while backing up though, maybe slightly, but the difference is not earth shattering IMO.

Iím comparing 03 - 05 X-Stars with the new 06.

I was prepared to sand it, but mine tracks absolutely straight, right out of the box.

Strange everyone is calling this the 06 rudder. My 06 has the smaller rudder and it the one from the factory.

Especially since it was available on the '99. Who started calling it '06 rudder', anyway?

I'm not sure who coined it the 06 rudder. I'm starting to think that I should have rudder envy? But in defense of the boat, it was in the pool! :D

Since they switched (back to, possibly) to that rudder in '06, it's as good a name as any to call it. But if you guys want to call it the '99 rudder I'm all for it.:D

I guess it was a mid year 06 change.

I think my 06 handles pretty good with the smaller rudder on it now. I wonder how much of a difference it would make in my boat.

From what I remember it was definitely a mid year switch. From what I hear you'd be amazed at the difference.

Is the rudder made by OJ?

Ok, I know I am playing with fire here, but ??? I have a 2000 Prostar with the winged rudder and am not overly impressed with the handling. It is lacking response in turns and can't spin the boat around quickly. This isn't another need to grease problem but a performance issue. Is this poor handling just a characteristic of having the wings on there? and has anyone replaced the rudder for a wingless version and if so what is the difference in handling and wake please? Just noticed the superimposed images of the two rudders.
