View Full Version : Voltgauge Reading?

My volt gauge on my 94 205 with a TBI engine has always read lower voltage (around 10 to 12 while running. I checked the voltage at the battery while running and it has been arourd 13 so I knew it was the gauge or wireing to the gauge. Today I decided to mess around with it and here is what I found:

The voltage on the large bolt and wire of the alternator is 12.67 (good)

The voltage (with the key on) on the small purple wire coming out of the alternator is 10.67.

Before I take the dash apart, does this sound like a bad ground on the gauge or somewhere else?

My gauge always reads right between 12 and 13 volts.

Follow the purple wire to the ignition switch and check the voltage there. It goes to the dash to the ign switch, then to the safety switch and to the motor. The safety switch may be old and corroded. Push it in or pull it out, depending on the switch, several times and see if the voltage goes up.

Alternator output should be closer to 14.4Vdc so the gauge should be reading higher than it is. If it's not, clean both battery terminals and check it again.

I took off the safty switch and it is a sealed unit but I was able to poke through one of the wires and it showed 11 volts.
I took the dash apart and the wire in the ignition switch showed 11 so I sanded the switch and the wire (I looked clean) now the guage is higher.

I dry fired it for a second (I know, I know) and the guage popped up to 13 volts.

I also noticed the alternator belt was pretty lose so I tighted it up.

THANKS ALOT JIM!!!!!

Note to self: turn off key when done working on boat.

I now have 3.5 more hours on the boat than this morning and I did not ski.

Footin; you are insightful, I could not see the problem and still do not see the problem you are trying to fix? Number on a VOM.......JK, sure there must be something going on.

It must have been the bad connection at the key, after I cleaned it the volt guage went up.

I actually thought about driving down this morning. I thought we could repack your bearings too.

We'll see! In laws are in town thru next weekend  and I don't want to get killed by my wife so I don't think coming up next weekend would be an option I should go for. Hopefully I can have it diagnosed this weeK!
