View Full Version : When to change fuel filter?

04-14-2006, 01:02 PM
I found an owners manual online for my 1996 prostar 190, w/ LT-1. The manual says that you should "check/replace" the fuel filter b/f each use. This seems a little excessive to me  . I dont have a problem checking it but not replacing it. Especially if everything seems to be running and working great.
Now to the question. Is there a general recomendation as to how often the fuel filter needs to be changed?
Thanks for your help.

Per Vince's (skidim) advice, I change my fuel filter element and the spin-on fuel/H20 separator once per year (usually in the spring).

I check it for leaks during the first use, but after that, unless I'm getting surging or other symptoms of a problem, I don't worry about "checking" it.

Check it once in awhile when your looking under there or if you notice gas in the bilge or a strong smell of fuel.

Otherwise, it gets changed every season or so.

I change both of them every other year.

Thanks for the advice. That sounds a little more reasonable.

Going to replace mine this year and plan to do so every spring when de-winterizing.
