OK, I started my ski season last nite. I had a few buddies wanting to try the boat out for a test run after winter. I was jonesing to ski bad! The lake conditions on gitchee gumee were just right, well a bit cool, but nice and calm. so we went! The boat fired right up, no problems. A few puffs of white smoke from the fogging oil and that was it. (hey eastie you were right, my engine didnt freeze!!!LOL!!) I tried my HO Triumph for the first time too, but I really cant say much about it as I was SO excited just to be out there that I kinda forgot I was on a new ski. I will say the ski was nice, no problems, but thats as objective as I can be after two runs. I was just too would up to tune in to that skis characteristics. The dry suit worked like a champ! I stayed warm and dry, the feet were a bit chilly, but not bad. I want to say thanks to who ever it was here that told me to bring a beer cooler of hot water with to soak my feet in after skiing!! That works awesome! my feet were warm and toasty in seconds. What a rush, I am so happy to be out there. I can extend my season by about 6 weeks on each end with this drysuit. OK heres the pics.

NICE!

Ok, been thinkin' about getting a drysuit for the exact reason you stated (extending the season 6weeks per side of the summer) Give me the lowdown on which one you got, where you got it, how much did it cost?

thanks UP!

#47, I got the Barefoot international suit. I researched it alot, and alot of people recommended the BFI suit. I am very pleased with it. The level of quality in materials and workmanship is great. It certainly did the job for me. The BFI suit seals are supposed to be thicker, stronger and tighter than others, keeping water out. the seems are more durable too. I find it to be the best value out there. I got mine form Barefoot central. If you join up there, you get a big discount on it. I think I paid around $280 after the discount. Its well worth it in my book. I asked around here, and did research on the net and I felt the BFI suit was the best option, I am glad I chose it now that I have tried it. :twocents:

Let us know what you decide :)

Congrats UMP, way to get it started! Water temp? How long has it been since ice out?

What gloves are you using, just the usual comp gloves or something for warmth? Does your drysuit have any cinches on the leg cuffs? I have a Ski Warm Sahara, but after a few years of use, I get water intrusion at the ankles. Not sure if I should find some kind of external cinch or what.

I guess I'd better get off my butt pretty quick and get the boat in the water !!!!

UMP, so you can pretty much wear whatever you want underneath then? It's just baggy enough to wear sweatshirt and whatever and still not too baggy so it gets in the way? I'm definitely going to check into them. Thanks again!

The water temp was about 40 degrees depending on where we were, it was colder out farther from shore. The ice just left last week!!! I could have gone then, but there were ice chunks everywhere and I was paranoid about doing a "titanic" manueve on the MC. cant have that!

So far so good on the Triumph Leroy!!! :) I will keep you posted Bud!!

Heres what I wore:

Under Armour COLD GEAR long underwear top and bottom
Polartec 200 fleece pants
a regular ol cotton sweatshirt
the BFI drysuit
my PFD vest
CHOTA neoprene fleece lined wetsuit gloves(these are terrific!!!)
a neoprene hood

I stayed plenty warm. In fact I was sweating just a bit. Its not too baggy either. It allows me to move well. I talked to Mike Siepel before I bought, and he advised me to get a XL per my hieght and weight 6"2 and 190-200 lbs. it works very well, not cumbersome or in the way at all.

There are cinches on the ankles and wrists, but I didnt use them, I had no problmes. I kept the overlays rolled up on my legs so I fit in my bindings better. WOrked like a charm!!!

Congrats UMP!!! I am in the southern lower and I think a buddy and i are going to try to start the season then. I started the boat cleanup. All I have left is the oil change and trans fluid change. I may try to do that tomorrow since I don't have to work. It's going to be 75 degrees today so I am wishing I had already done my changes so I could go tonight, might go get the changes done tonight and get that done.

You get my vote for sure now man. Really cool pic's. Two questions:

How come I cannot see any other boats? ;)

and secondly, if you wore your PFD on the inside of your drysuit, would it float you? Sounds like a poll is in order?

Oooo, inquiring minds WANT to know!!!!

There was one fishing boat, one kayak and 2 mallard ducks out there with me. I was considering signaling my driver to go for the Kayak for a "spray by" but I didnt know the Kayaker, and its WAYYY too cold for spray by's this time of year!

Way to go UMP. I put my dock out this last week, working on a used lift I just bought and I get the boat out of storage this weekend. I can tell you, putting the dock out and stepping in the water was enough to take your breath away - and I am 4-5 hours south of you. I will have to look into a dry suit!

No problem Atlfootr, I dont mind, go for it! You can tell Mike. I spoke with Mike on the phone about the BFI suit before I purchased, and he was kind enough to call me back and answer all my questions. The customer service alone was impressive. they returned emails and phone calls. You dont see that too often these days.

Peason, get a dry suit man! One trip made a believer out of me. I wanna go again as soon as its calm!

CAMO BOY!! I was waiting for you to show up and add your wisdom to this topic. Superhero outfits are hard to come by these days, so I figured I could pass off a drysuit as a superhero outift. I mean, tight clothes are no longer in style, everyone wears those baggy pants, so I figured the baggy suit would be a good idea, its got a superhero color scheme happenin. I need a cape now. Maybe I should get one of those hockey masks like Jason Vorhees wore. that would get some attention.

Gonna have to pass tonite. I should probably go and practice my tunes for my upcomming music show...... Hard to focus on music when ski season is "here"...
Hopefully it will be nicer tomarrow or saturday and I can get out and ski again!!!

Tweider, SSSSHHHHH!! Keep it quiet bro! your in the circle of trust now. Only a few people know about me being a super hero! Its OK to talk about it here on the TMC, everyone here knows.

Lakey, sounds like a Sauna dip up here in the north. First off, you need to cut a hole in the Ice on the lake, then You go in the Sauna(or hot tub), get good and drunk and warm, then go out and jump in the ice cold lake and pretend its fun. then you run back to the Sauna and get warm again. Its a ritual up here.....along with many other strange riutals we have.....like biting the head off of the first smelt you catch. That happens every spring up here when the smelt start running, which will probably be this weekend since the ice just left.

ya know, all this crime fighting has spread me and No a bit thin, and we are thinking about adding a 3rd super hero to our team. Anyone interested? I am gonna tell you know that I have to give preference to my bruthas that supported me during my election here. Submit your applications to me for review. I want to know what special powers you have, what crime fighting you have done in the past,etc...

UMP...been skimming all the posts here so I appologize if someone already mentioned these and i blew by it.....

1) Much easier putting the vest inside the drysuit IMHO
2) I have a hot/cold transome shower on my boat that is great for early season re-warmups....then you can put beer and ice in your cooler :D

JohnnyB!! Rock on! :guitar: Where do you ski in the GB area? inland lakes or on Lake Michigan?

JohnnyB
04-14-2006, 10:54 AM
Mainly ski on the Fox River anywhere between Green Bay and Kimberly....several spots along there to ski....depends on who goes and where we decide to meet and who's boat we're using.

Also have some buddies that have a slalom course on the South end of Winnebago....get down there a few times a year.

Also live a couple miles off of the bay....my parents live right on the bay...if its really calm out there, I'll stop bye my Dad's and get a pull from him....he's 67 but still loves to ski.

Also ski around the Minocqua area....have a sister-in-law that has a lake house on a 120acre lake about 20miles from where Erks is.

If you're ever in Green Bay, give me a heads up.....my office is about 3 miles from the river and I often tow the boat in to work and ski after work.... :D
