Anyone else having trouble with their 197's sun deck/storage flying up as they are cruising down the road?

I've never had that problem on my 195 and my storage doors sit on top of the rear seat instead of flush with it like yours. Maybe your gas shocks that hold the lids up are too powerful and are exerting alot of pressure in the down position trying to force the lids up.

What about the latch?

Hmmm...my dads has a latch on either side. Maybe he put those on himself?

I've never had an issue with mine opening but I trailer it only twice a year and not too far.

I had a similar situation happen to me on a loaner 209 with a broken latch on the motor box. Going down the road the motor box would open itself and I'm NOT talking about the clamshell style either. This was the entire motor box. I ended up tieing (sp?) it down to the pylon. Talk about scare you to death. I thought for sure it would rip the box right off but it did not. I know the motor box had a latch but on my '04 197 there is NO WAY my motor box would fly up like that even if the latch did not work which it does.
To make a long story short - I'm positive that you have defective gas shocks on your trunk. There is NO WAY wind can get under there and cause them to ride up without the gas shocks being defective. I would contact my dealer about having them replaced either under warranty or you'll have to buy them yourself but I'm confident with the proper working shocks your trunk lid(s) will not open. I'm guessing only one side does it? Surely both shocks are not defective, although once one opens and wind gers in, it might open the other. Hope that helps.

it think thats why they changed the design, that and the rope gets caught in the opening every so often...

not on my 197, but it happened alot on my 00 190 doors because they were not tucked behind the seat back like the 197's are styled. (the rope always found it's way in between those hatch lids, like murphy's law)
Tex, the dealer fixed my 00 190 hatch lid problem by installing a strap between the two from underneath that allowed you to snap the strap to the other door. it was farm engineering, but it worked and nobody knew what the strap was, but me.
I'd still see the doors raise a bit on the highway around 70 or so, but they never blew open again.

Tex, are you driving with the center window open? I had this same problem on my 2002-209. That is why they changed the design on the newer 209's -the back of the seat now comes up even with the sun deck as opposed to our boats where the sun deck goes over the seat back cushion.
I found that I need to make sure that I tow with the window closed and that I need to make sure I don't "over" pack the storage area.
I too thought it was my gas shocks, but since I have been towing with window closed no - problem. I also have a jump seat between the drivers seat and observers seat which helps to re-direct the wind.

Peason,

Thanks for the advice. I usually tow with the window open. I have put a bungee across the back between the cleats.
