Any of you guys own a 2001-2002 4Runner? I am looking into possibly getting one and was wondering what you guys think of them. Do they only come with the V-6? If so, how is that for towing sort of short distances? I'm mainly wondering how you like the SUV overall, and if you would recommend one to somebody else.

Ask Ryan! He is a 4runner lover! His is slightly newer, but I am sure he will still have input!

I owned a 2000 4Runner SR5 with a V6. It was a great vehicle, towed our X7 nicely. We loved the 4Runner so much We have gotten a new one. (2005 Sport Edition 4X4 V8) I also own a 2002 Tacoma SR5 V6 It plus like a charm also. I know you will be very pleased with your purchase, I am. VERY DEPENDABLE...

Yes, 01-02 were 183hp 3.4L V6 only. A big perk over the preceding 3.0. As long as you're not towing up anything over 5% grade it should suit you quite well. Are you in CO or WI? A 3.4L should do you fine to any of the local Denver lakes.

But! If you can squeeze another thou' or two you could get into a phenomenal 4.0 V6 in the '03+ (245 hp and 283 lb-feet of torque) torque comes in at lower RPM than the 3.4. Test drive both to get a feel for power supply. Just don't test drive an '05+ V8 or you'll never go back to the 6.

My Dad had and 88 (back when they were just pick-ups with a roof).

Got into an accident in April 2 years ago..............if they were not in their truck I'd have been giving the eulogy........Thanks to the Universe that they are stil here.

IMHO You cannot go wrong!!

Thanks for the responses guys. I have always heard that Toyotas are really dependable. Is it hit or miss with the used ones, or are they all pretty good?

I started looking for an 01-02 this time last year and found that the availability and then the subsequent pricing for the used 4 Runners made it tough to find the right one. I was not 100% on the 03-06 body style, but once I drove my 05 V8 it was all over. The ride and power on the new body style is much better IMO. If you break down resale and new purchase price the new one may be a better deal.

For the most part, yes they are all going to be pretty good. Anything with 200 moving parts can have random issues. Although, I suggest Toyota trucks have far fewer issues as a whole compared to Explorers & Trailblazers, especially in the areas of electrical and transmissions.

Before I bought my last vehicle, I did a lot of research on these era 4-Runners. There are some with dealer installed superchargers that increase the power over the stock performance (don't remember what years had them). My ex-girlfriend had one with a 5speed and it was a sweet ride. The humming sound of the supercharge made you hit the gas more than you needed.
